There are two routes on the Grassi Lakes Trail, a 2.5 mile round trip hike that is rated easy to moderate. On the Upper Grassi Lakes Trail, hikers will find a spacious trail with a gentle uphill slope most of the way. The more difficult trek, the Grassi Lakes Interpretive Trail, consists of more narrow paths and a set of steps that ascend and descend (depending on the way you are going) at a much steeper slope. The trails do merge near the trail head.
We decided to ascend using the first trail and descend using the second. Although more rigorous, following the second route was totally worth it since it provided the only access to this breathtaking view of Grassi Lakes Falls!
